TEL AVIV, Israel – September 21, 2014 – Under the motto “No Project = No Entry”, 200 of Israel’s top innovators, geeks, entrepreneurs, makers and designers gathered for 52 hours at the tenth annual Geekcon weekend near Caesarea. During the weekend, participants teamed up to create over 50 innovative, useless projects across software, robotics, neuroscience, Internet, mechanical and science disciplines.
This year, with Geekcon celebrating its tenth anniversary, a few special tracks were added to the usual activities. These workshops included: a day of black hat workshops, Drinkcon projects focused on innovating around alcohol and food consumption, and brain hacking and virtual reality seminars.
The Geekcon platform challenged participants to overcome technical barriers and quickly build highly innovative creations in a very short time.
Project examples for this year included – The DeBugger: Ultimate Cockroach Killerbot, a hummus 3D printer, the Bane Mask Translator (translating English to Hebrew to Hebrew with Bane accent), the UNRWA Autonomous Baby Carriage with firing missiles, and Human Pac-Man, in which players steer the online Pac-Man game through head motion. A full projects list can be found here: http://geekcon.org/2014projects/
Geekcon was inspired by such famous innovative gatherings as Burning Man and Foo Camp. The Geekcon platform is driven by the guideline: “hacking the digital lifestyle.” The associated annual event, often referred to as a “summer camp” for Geeks, attracts a critical mass of Israel’s top entrepreneurs and technological innovators.
So far the platform has contributed to the creation of several startups, and generation of business of over $160 million. The Geekcon creativity has attracted some big-name sponsors including the AT&T Foundry, Microsoft, Yandex, Yahoo!, Autodesk, Google and Wix. The annual event is supported by a team of volunteers including Ilan Graicer, Eden Shochat, Gilli Cegla, Nimrod Lehavi, Shahar Zrihen, Eran Shir, Yair Reshef, Eyal Hershko, Yoram Avidan, Inbar Raz, Leon Fedotov, Matan Scharf, Sefi Atias and others.
